Walled Garden Transformation by The Leicester Landscaping Company
Client Brief
The homeowner approached The Leicester Landscaping Company seeking a complete redesign of their historic walled garden. Although the space had character and charm, it was severely underused and lacked any functional layout. The area consisted of old brickwork, uneven levels, overgrown planting, and a patch of unused ground that served no real purpose.
Despite its potential, the garden felt disconnected, impractical, and tired. The client wanted to turn the space into a refined, welcoming outdoor environment suitable for dining, entertaining, and everyday enjoyment.

Design Concept
Our design team created a concept that celebrated the original brick walls while introducing strong structure, greenery, and modern functionality. The focus was on creating a sophisticated entertaining space that blended seamlessly with the traditional surroundings. Key elements included:
1. A Large, Premium Dining Terrace
We designed a spacious natural stone patio, shaped to complement the garden’s existing curves and levels. This created a beautiful feature area for hosting family meals and social gatherings.
2. Bespoke Stone Retaining Walls
To manage the change in levels and add definition, we constructed tailored retaining walls using materials sympathetic to the historic garden. These walls shape the patio and give the entire space depth and architectural interest.
3. A Timber Pergola Retreat
Along the left side of the garden, we introduced a wooden pergola to provide a shaded, intimate seating nook. This added height, interest, and a second functional zone separate from the dining area.
4. Decorative Climbing Wall Planting
To soften the tall perimeter walls, we incorporated climbers and lush border planting. This adds texture, greenery, and seasonal blooms while enhancing the sense of enclosure and tranquillity.
5. Enhanced Lawn & Flow
A beautifully levelled lawn was laid to open the space visually and guide movement from one area to another. This creates balance between soft and hard landscaping.
Construction Phase
Our landscaping team delivered the entire build with care and precision. Works included:
• Clearing the old foundations and uneven debris
• Rebuilding and reinforcing necessary retaining walls
• Preparing levels for the patio and lawn
• Installing the natural stone terrace and steps
• Constructing the bespoke timber pergola
• Planting new borders and climbers along the walls
• Final shaping, turfing, and presentation of all surfaces
