“If I had a pound for every time I have been asked ‘how much does it cost to landscape the garden’ I wouldn’t still be landscaping gardens!” – Miles Wellings, Director.

The simple answer is it varies on a multitude of factors. The cost of designing and building a new landscape garden is determined by the following factors: size of area to be landscaped, specification of materials, access into the garden, is the ground flat or on a gradient, do you want lighting, electrics and planting? Just to name a few of the major factors that effect the cost.

This is why it is so important to start off by designing the garden? Would you have an extension built on your home without a set of architectural plans?

If the answer is yes then we may not be the company for you! When we design the garden we start off by listening to you to understand your requirements as every garden is different with each clients different needs and requirements.

As the leading domestic garden design and build company in the East Midlands this is why for us it is so important to first establish these factors and then address the awkward elephant in the room… the budget.

The reason why it is so important for us to get a rough understanding of the budget is because as you will see in examples below gardens range in cost, starting at a build cost of £10,000 and going up to £300,0000.  Our average project is £30,000 inc VAT.

When we have an understanding of the budget we can then make sure we design the garden to meet your budget AND specification. Meaning we can guide you sensibly for what is possible for the budget with our design and construction knowledge, managing your expectations from the beginning rather than you receiving a disappointing and unrealistic proposal at the end.

Warning! Do not design your new garden until you know the following!

We started the design aspect of our company 3 years ago after we got fed up of receiving calls from so called designer’s who had created a 2D plan for a landscaped garden that did not help the client visualise how their new garden would look in any way, and had designed an all singing all dancing Chelsea award winning garden for £80,000 when the clients budget was £20,000-30,000 for us to come in and quote and look like the bad people! You get where where I am going with this.

When designing the garden it is important that the company you choose has a full understanding of what goes into the build including what is actually possible to construct and what the costings are of different designs to actually build.

We now only construct our own designs, making sure that we fully understand the clients budget and requirements first. We then create 3D digital renders to show you EXACTLY how the garden will look once it has been constructed so you are 100% clear on what is being constructed before we even put a spade in the ground!

Would you spend £30,000 on a new car without even seeing it? Okay enough of my metaphors now!

Important Areas of the Project

A picture is worth a thousand words, but a 2D and 3D design is worth so much more. They provide you with the opportunity to visually explore exactly how your garden will look once completed before we even put a spade in the ground!

A three-dimensional design for your landscaping project ensures that we are all on the same page from the start, giving you a better chance at an end result that perfectly meets (or even exceeds) your expectations!

A 3D rendering of your landscaping project will give you a much better idea of how it will actually look when it’s completed than a traditional blueprint ever could. You’ll be able to see how the various elements come together and get a feel for how the finished product will flow. This is especially helpful if you’re working with an existing structure, such as a patio or deck, that you want to make sure integrates well with the new landscape.

In many cases, there are several material options available for each element and with a 3D design, you’ll be able to see how each one looks in relation to everything else and make an informed decision about which one is right for your project. We will work closely with you until you are happy that we have achieved your dream design and will gladly make up to two revisions. This will also help inform you of a more accurate costing!

The size of your garden will have a big impact on the overall cost. If you have a small garden and would only like some raised beds it will obviously cost a lot less than if you have a large garden that’s in need of a complete overhaul.

Take this garden for example, just because you have a small traditional suburbia garden, it doesn’t mean you can’t bring a little bit of the country with a hint of modernization to your space!

Here we let a natural theme take priority, with beautiful green lawns surrounded by bountiful borders filled with purple plants to emulate the true British countryside with beautiful paving and brickwork.

Whereas a medium style garden provides an excellent opportunity to fill the apace with an abundance of both hardscaping and landscaping. This garden comprises of perfectly laid paving that contrasts the lush lawns, juxtaposed against the colourful planting that provides height and structure and cleverly draws your attention away from the garden room.

If you have the space, a larger garden will give you more room to experiment with different types of designs and will ultimately be more enjoyable. This garden allowed us to explore many different ideas with multiple areas of interest to create a stunning display, emphasizing the natural beauty of the English countryside, with the added influence of the Mediterranean sun.

Another factor to consider is your planting requirements and there are endless possibilities! The type of plants you choose will have a big impact on the overall look and feel of your landscape but also the cost.

You may want to have mixed borders that add both height and colour to create an eye-catching design that is sure to make a statement. Another benefit of mixed borders is that they are low maintenance and can provide you with year-round colour and texture, so you can enjoy looking at your garden no matter the weather. Or if you prefer a formal approach the emphasis will be on boxwoods and yews, so they can easily be shaped into hedges or balls. This planting will look great when accented with stone features such as fountains.

Perhaps a wild approach would be more suited to your style, filled with native plants and flowers that require little care. Perfect for attracting bees and butterflies to help pollinate other plants. For the instant impact you may want to include mature trees such as gnarled olive or stunning acers that create a visual focal point that can be one of the best and most timeless features that will continue to evolve.

We have an in-house plant specialist, who meets with out customers to determine the most suitable planting for your garden and to meet your requirements.

Also, don’t forget to factor in lighting for those late evening social gatherings. A well-lit garden can create an oasis to relax and rejuvenate after a long day.

Good lighting is critical for the functioning of your outdoor space; not only will it provide safety and security at night, but it can also help define your outdoor style, creating a truly unique experience.

Lighting can create atmosphere and soft drama, with a warm glow so you can enjoy the garden during those summer evenings.

The architectural impact also shouldn’t be underestimated, as you can light your planting and features such as gabion walls beautifully in the evening, throwing stunning shadows.

As part of our landscaping service, we offer all electrical installations as part of the construction project.

So, whether you use up lighting on trees or spotlights on plants, lighting is one of the most important aspects of garden design.

The type of garden you want will play a vital role in determining the cost as well.

Maybe you’d like an English Garden design which is characterized by its cottage-style plants and flowers. This type of garden is perfect for homes with lots of greenery and a more natural feel. Some of the most common plants used in this style of garden are roses, lavender, and daisies. To get that classic English country look, add white picket fences or stone paths.

Or perhaps a Mediterranean Garden design is what you’re after, inspired by the gardens found in countries like Italy, Greece, and Spain. This type of garden is perfect for homes with lots of sunshine and warmer temperatures. Popular plants used in Mediterranean gardens include olive trees, grape vines, and lavender. To get that classic Tuscan look, you may also consider adding an outdoor firepit or pergola.

The Contemporary Garden design may be a consideration which is characterized by its sharp lines and geometric shapes. This type of garden is perfect for homeowners who want a modern look for their outdoor space. Some common plants used in contemporary gardens include succulents, cactus, and evergreens. If you want to add some architectural interest to your garden, consider incorporating metal elements like sculptures or trellises.

All told, we are able to undertake projects starting from £10,000 upwards. The average person could expect to spend around £30,000 on their dream garden—but it’ll be worth it when you can step outside and enjoy the fruits (or flowers) of your labour!
