Decking is a popular feature of many outdoor spaces, providing an attractive and functional area for relaxation and entertainment. However, like any outdoor surface, decking can be subject to wear and tear from the elements and regular use. To ensure that your decking remains in good condition throughout the summer months, it’s important to implement a regular maintenance routine.

Here are a few tips on how to maintain decking this summer.

Firstly, it’s essential to keep your decking clean

Dirt, grime, and other debris can accumulate on the surface of your decking over time, which can lead to a buildup of mould and mildew. To prevent this from happening, it’s important to sweep your decking regularly to remove any loose dirt or debris. You can also use a pressure washer or a specialised decking cleaner to remove any stubborn stains or marks.

Secondly, you should inspect your decking for any signs of damage or wear and tear. Look out for any cracked or warped boards, loose screws or nails, or any other signs of damage. If you spot any issues, it’s important to address them as soon as possible to prevent further damage from occurring.

Thirdly, it’s important to protect your decking from the sun and other weather conditions. Ultraviolet rays from the sun can cause the wood fibres in your decking to break down over time, leading to fading and discolouration. To prevent this from happening, consider applying a protective coating or sealant to your decking. This will help to protect it from the elements and keep it looking great all summer long.

However, composite decking requires a little different care.

Whilst you still need to regularly clean the surface from dirt and debris, you should avoid using pressure washers as they can cause damage to the boards by stripping away the coating that protects them from moisture. Instead use a soft bristled brush and for any stains use a mild detergent and water mixture. We’d recommend prompt cleaning of spills like food, oil, and grease to minimise the risk of stains. You can also use an air compressor or a small brush to remove debris from gaps which can prevent water from pooling and in turn mould growth. We’d also advise placing planters and other outdoor furniture items on risers to prevent moisture from accumulating beneath them.

Finally, it’s important to use the right tools and equipment when maintaining your decking. Avoid using harsh chemicals or abrasive cleaning products, as these can damage the surface of your decking. Instead, use a soft-bristled brush or a specialised decking cleaning brush to gently clean the surface of your decking. You should also use stainless steel screws or nails when repairing any damage to your decking, as these are less likely to rust or corrode over time.

Maintaining your decking during the summer months requires a little bit of effort and attention to detail. By following these tips and implementing a regular maintenance routine, you can keep your decking looking great for years to come.
