Designing A Garden Over Different Levels

If you own a garden with a slope, then you probably have faced difficulties in designing it. A sloping garden can be an ideal canvas for creating beautiful and dynamic outdoor spaces, but it also poses some challenges. With some proper planning and a bit of creative flair, you can transform even the steepest of slopes into a stunning garden. One way to achieve this is by creating different zones in your garden. Whether you have a small or large garden area, zoning allows you to maximise your space, divide it into sections, and create a harmonious flow. Designing a garden can be an exciting process. By incorporating varying levels of height and depth into your garden design, you’ll create a stunning, multi-layered space that’s both functional and beautiful. In this blog post, we will walk you through the essential steps to master the art of garden design over multiple heights and elevations.

Start With a Plan

Before starting your garden design, it is essential to analyse the site, including the slope, soil type, drainage, and sun exposure. This information will help you determine plant selection, water management, and other essential elements of your design. Once you have a clear understanding of the site’s conditions, sketch out a rough plan, and mark off any areas that will need soil stabilisation or erosion control. This will help you get a better idea of how to create different zones based on the available space.

The secret to designing any great garden is thinking about what you want out of it. Will you be planting vegetables, flowers, or herbs? Do you want a space for outdoor entertaining or relaxation? Once you have a clear idea of your goals, start sketching out a plan that incorporates your ideas. Draw out your garden beds, paths, and any other features you want to include. Consider how you can incorporate different levels of height and depth into your design to add visual interest and functionality.

Use Retaining Walls to Create Tiers

One of the challenges of designing a sloping garden is preventing soil erosion and stabilising the ground. The most effective way to do this is by creating terraces or retaining walls. Terraces create flat areas on a slope and also help control water runoff. You can build retaining walls with natural stone, concrete blocks, or treated timber to add support, increase the garden’s accessibility, and create more useable places to sit, entertain and dine. You can also add garden beds in between the retaining walls to create a more fluid and cohesive design.

Incorporate Vertical Garden Walls

Vertical garden walls have become increasingly popular in recent years, and for good reason! They’re a fantastic way to add greenery to a smaller space, while also creating an eye-catching focal point. Consider incorporating a couple of vertical garden walls into your design to add an extra level of height and depth.

Create Different Garden Zones

The first step in creating different zones in a garden is by defining the boundaries. When zoning, it’s important to consider the styles of each section, how they relate to each other, and how the walkways and/or steps will tie the zones together and add a unique design element to your garden. Perhaps, you’d like to have an area reserved for herbs, whilst also having a space for entertaining guests. Or maybe, you’d like a quiet little corner where you can read and escape from it all. You could have a sunken garden, an elevated garden, and a garden on a level with your patio. Seating areas and pergolas built at the top of the slope provide a beautiful view and a perfect space to relax. Each garden zone can have its own unique planting scheme that complements the overall garden design. By separating your garden into different zones, you add interest and functionality to your space. You may use stones, brick, or even hedges as dividers. The possibilities are endless.

Choose Your Focal Points

Once you determine where the zones will be, designing and creating the spaces can be fun and creative. Decide what type of atmosphere or feelings you want to invoke in each section. This is where you can play with colours, textures, and different types of plants, trees, and garden accessories. Adding a water feature, for instance, is perfect for creating a sense of tranquillity. A well-placed piece of garden furniture can give the area an inviting and cozy feel. These focal points will help to add interest and make each section unique.

Use Plants and Flowers to Create Layers

Choose plants with varying heights and textures to add depth and interest. For example, consider planting low-lying creeping thyme or lavender in between stepping stones, and then planting taller flowers like peonies or poppies behind them. This will add both depth and texture to your garden. Grouping plants by height and colour is a great way to create different zones in a garden. Consider tall plants as a backdrop, mid-sized plants as the middle layer, and short plants as the foreground. Using colours can also help create different zones, such as a section of purple flowers in contrast with a section of yellow flowers.

Consider the Climate

As you create your zones, it’s important to consider the different needs of each plant or tree. Sunlight, shade, and water needs are all important factors in maintaining plant health and vitality. For example, you can create a sun-loving zone on a raised area while keeping shade-loving plants in a lower level. You can add a shade under an arbor or use a tall hedge for privacy. It’s essential to select plants that thrive best in the selected zone while avoiding overcrowding plants. This way, you’ll be able to provide the conditions each plant needs to thrive.

Add Decorative Elements

Finally, adding decorative elements can help bring your different zones to life. Decorative elements such as water features, statues, trellises, and garden art can add a unique touch to your garden. Adding lighting to the garden can create a magical atmosphere and highlight the garden’s beauty at night. Using these elements to draw attention to specific areas of your garden can create a polished and stunning garden design that makes a big impact

Designing a garden over multiple levels is a fun and creative project. By incorporating different heights, depths, and layers into your garden design, you’ll create a beautiful space that’s both functional and visually appealing. Reuben Aiden and Sean put in hard graft and completely transformed our garden within three weeks, Miles planned out the garden taking into account our specific needs, whilst Terry organised planting taking into account sun and shade requirements. It was a pleasure having them in our property as they are all such lovely guys. It wasn't cheap but it was value for money.

We had our garden make-over done back in January-February. This review hasn't taken so long to do because we're not happy but because of one of the factors that Miles had to consider when planning our garden. So the factors he had to consider: 1. My health - I have fibromyalgia and therefore there are many times when my husband has to do everything. We needed a garden that was very easy to maintain and simple to develop. 2. We have an active Irish Terrier, and like all terriers, he likes to dig! We needed a way to protect the garden from our beloved dog. 3. We had exceptionally heavy clay in the garden. 4. It was a new build bungalow that was oddly shaped, with a patio that wasn't what we wanted it to be, and a hot tub to consider. We weren't sure how best to work around that. Miles came up with a plan that delivered on ensuring the garden is everything we want it to be. It is easy to maintain and we have already started to put in little touches of our own. By placing a lovely looking gate at one side, it can keep the dog out of the main garden when he's on his own and it neatly separates the main garden from my kitchen garden. 40 tonnes of heavy clay was dug out and replaced the first week of the build. This has given the new plants ample time to develop. The design of the garden has included an enlarged patio with paving linking each side of the main garden, preventing muddy sections. The pergola is already a stunning feature, with it only going to get better as the evergreen jasmine develops over time it. At every stage of the work, Miles and his team were completely professional, with especial thanks to Terry for his choice of plants. Over 95% of them have thrived, which I have been told is very high when absolutely everything is new! In June I was invited to open my garden for our village open gardens day. The compliments from everyone who came were lovely, though I had to point out it wasn't my work but the work of the Leicester Landscaping Company. Many thanks to them.

So pleased with our new garden. Transformed a boggy mess (heavy clay soil) into a lovely relaxing space. The whole process from planning (Miles came up with some great ideas for us and the design images were so close to reality), groundworks (removing 35 tonnes of clay and putting in drainage) to the final fixing were all painless. The guys that did the work were great and it was amazing fo see the transformation happen before our eyes. We would highly recommend 'The Leicester Landscaping Company'
